The volume of M&A deals in Russia in 2023 totaled $50.6 billion. This is a record figure since 2019

In the Q4 of 2023, 135 M&A deals worth $17.2 billion closed on the Russian market, Kommersant reported, citing data from the AK&M agency. A total of 536 deals worth $50.59 billion were closed in 2023, marking the highest figure since 2019. State-owned companies participated in nearly a quarter of these transactions. The largest deal was the acquisition of Otkrytie Bank by VTB Bank for $4.83 billion. In 2022, the Russian M&A market saw 517 deals worth $42.9 billion.

At the same time, there was a decline in the number and volume of deals involving the sale of Russian-based assets by foreign entities to Russian buyers. In 2023, 97 such deals worth $11.14 billion were concluded, compared to 109 deals worth $16.31 billion in 2022. Companies from the US (14 assets sold), Germany (13), and Sweden (12) were the most active in exiting the Russian market.

Experts anticipate further growth in the M&A market in 2024, driven by an increasing number of investors from "friendly" countries and the re-domiciliation of companies to Russian jurisdiction.
